LL.M. Application Process: What You Need to Know

Congratulations on taking the initial step of planning your next educational endeavor. While the formalities of the application process may seem daunting at first, the right strategy and proper management will help you tackle the challenge. LL.M. applications consist of a set of requirements that is different from those of J.D. applications. Let us briefly run you through the basics of what you need to know to make this initial step a successful one. With most LL.M. application deadlines in December, it is – if you have not already – about time to start your application for the August 2021 entry class.

Choosing the Right School

Deciding on the right LL.M. program and law school is a crucial step in starting your application. Dozens of factors determine whether or not a particular school, program or location is the right fit for you. Needless to say, it is virtually impossible to cover them all, as every single application case is different and deserves an individual approach. However, there are some common factors to consider.

Each school offers a wide range of LL.M. programs. For example, Georgetown Law alone offers eight specialized LL.M. degrees (Taxation, International Business & Economic Law, Environmental and Energy Law, Global Heath Law & Governance, Securities & Financial Regulation, National Security Law, National and Global Health Law, Technology). Understanding the curriculum and courses offered for each program will not only better prepare you for the upcoming academic year, but also help you selecting some school and programs of interest.

Some law schools also offer different graduation requirements for U.S. trained-students versus foreign-trained students. LL.M. programs may even differ in terms of duration. Some may be full-time, others part-time, catering to the needs of not only younger students but also trained professionals. Typically, however, LL.M. programs will last one to two years.

If the recent developments around COVID-19 are a concern, consider that many schools have adjusted their program structures. Some schools will offer remote classes, others even offer so-called “hybrid” programs with virtual and on-campus lectures.

Admission Criteria for LL.M. Programs

In order to be considered for the LL.M. program, most law schools in the United States require that applicant must have a J.D. from an ABA-approved U.S. law school or a first law degree (J.D., LL.B. or the equivalent) from a foreign law school. Please make sure you check the eligibility requirements for each school prior to applying. If you are a foreign student, the same applies to language requirements. Most law schools will accept the standard English tests such as TOEFL or IELTS. Do make sure that you meet the required English language proficiency score and that your test results are available on time for your applications.

Application Materials

Application materials may differ depending on the requirements set by each law school. Below is a list of common application materials law schools will typically seek:

• Application Form

• Personal statement

• Optional Statement/Addendum

• CV/Résumé

• Transcript(s)

• Diploma(s) (for degrees that have been granted)

• LSAC Report (if applicable)

• Letters of Recommendation (number may vary)

• TOEFL or IELTS Score (if applicable)

• Financial aid/Scholarship application (if applicable)

• Application fee (if applicable)

Application Process

Most law schools accept online application via LSAC. However, some schools also accept paper applications or online application through their online platforms. Please ensure you are using the right channel to submit your application. The most stellar application must reach your law school of choice on time and in the right format.
